What you'll need
A metal tape measure, a spirit level, a pen and paper, and ideally a second person to hold the other end of the tape.
Step by step

Prepare the opening
Remove any existing doors, tracks and fixings. Measure the opening itself, not your old doors or track. If there is skirting or cornice inside the opening, measure above the skirting and below the cornice, or remove them first.

Measure the top width
Measure across the top of the opening from wall to wall (or jamb to jamb), just below the ceiling or bulkhead. Enter this as the Top Width.

Measure the bottom width
Measure across the bottom of the opening from wall to wall, just above the floor. Enter this as the Bottom Width. Walls are rarely perfectly straight, so the top and bottom widths are often a few millimetres different. That's normal.

Measure the left height
Measure from the floor to the ceiling (or bulkhead) on the left side of the opening. On carpet, press the tape firmly down into the carpet. Enter this as the Left Height.

Measure the right height
Measure from the floor to the ceiling on the right side of the opening. Enter this as the Right Height. It's worth also checking the height in the middle. If the middle is noticeably lower than either side, call us before ordering.

Where to measure
Tips for an accurate fit
- Always measure in millimetres (mm), not centimetres or inches.
- Use a metal tape measure and measure each point twice.
- For wide openings, mark a point 1000mm in from one wall, measure from the other wall to the mark, then add 1000mm.
- Use a spirit level to check whether the floor and ceiling are level. A floor that drops more than about 15mm across the opening may need a packer or floor baton.
- If the ceiling isn't level or the opening is higher than our maximum, a bulkhead can give the track a straight, level surface to fix to.
- Check the opening is deep enough for the track and that nothing (light switches, architraves, shelving) sits in the path of the doors.
